Trapped in Suburbia…

The Burlington Post editorial board has endorsed two Conservative Party candidates in the ridings of Burlington and Halton.

In Burlington, the post has endorsed incumbent Mike Wallace saying:

While we believe that Mike Wallace (2006-present) and Paddy Torsney (1993-2005) has each represented the interests of the riding well, the tiebreaker for us is all about Wallace’s record.

While he is hardly a political heavyweight in the context of the Conservative party, he has worked hard to support local needs, through federal funding of $4-million for Burlington’s proposed performing arts centre, $30 million for a restoration project in Hamilton Harbour and millions more for upgrades to Burlington’s GO Transit service.

Torsney had her chance for 12 years; Wallace deserves a second time around.

The bigger news, however, is the Post’s endorsement of Lisa Raitt in Halton. Garth Turner, the Conservative-Turned-Liberal incumbent has been making hay about how much support he has – all while staging multiple ‘positive experiences’ for the benefit of unwitting CPAC and CTV reporters.

In endorsing Ms. Raitt the Post said:

In Halton riding, voters have the choice between Liberal incumbent Garth Turner, Conservative Lisa Raitt, the NDP’s Robert Wagner and Green candidate Amy Collard.

At the local level, we feel newcomer Raitt brings invaluable experience as CEO and president of the Toronto Port Authority to a job that will see her focusing on Halton Region’s woefully underfunded infrastructure needs.

We also support Raitt because she represents the party that seems best equipped to lead Canada through the uncertainty of the current economic crisis south of the border, through the conclusion of Canada’s military involvement in Afghanistan and on to what we hope will be more prosperous days ahead.

While Turner is the riding’s most politically-experienced candidate, we believe the outspoken, rebellious, party-be-damned approach he has taken in the last two-and-a-half years will be counter-productive to the team-building environment we think Canadians want from their next government.

Not surprisingly, the Burlington Post is saying the same thing a lot of people have been saying for the past few years. That Garth really only seems to care about Garth.

That really shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. In fact, the Burlington Post is also reporting that in Monday’s All-Candidates meeting in Oakville Garth launched a verbal attack again Ms. Raitt, even after the moderator asked candidates to stick to election issues.

It looks like Garth isn’t going to be able to high-five himself for much longer.
